In 1642 Abel Tasman lands on the shores of Tasmania. He names it Van Diemen’s Land in honour of his patron Anthony van Diemen. For a long time it is an Australian penal colony. That legacy and because the connotation of the name Van Diemen with the word demon is the reason to change the name into Tasmania. However, Tasmania is the home of the Tasmanian devil. Not many images exist of the original inhabitants. Those we have found show that the natives are decorated with scarifications instead of tattoos.
