On the Marshall Islands mat-making is still a traditional art form. Many still earn a living from this craft. In former days people used to wear dress mats called jaki-ed with complicated patterns. The same patterns are also used in the tattoos of women, warriors and chiefs with the number of tattoos denoting their rank. Shortly after World War II the Americans use the Bikini atoll as testing ground for their atomic bombs. This island is now completely uninhabitable for thousands of years.
