The Caroline Islands lay in the western Pacific Ocean and include Ponapé, Kosrai, Yap, Palau and the Mariana Islands. And off course the thousands islands in between. Despite the enormous distances between the islands they share many traditions. People hop from island to island in their canoes to exchange goods. Thus copying each other’s customs including that of tattooing. The arrival of Europeans even reinforces this process. And at the end of the 19th century, tattooing is widespread throughout Micronesia. The most popular designs are those of dolphins, sharks and the frigate bird.
