The Germans name the islands in honour of German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The largest island is New Britain and home of the Tolai people. They are famous for their Duk Duk secret society. This is a powerful institute that arranges all tribal matters. Only men can become a member, but not before paying a large entree fee. Every full moon they perform a ritual dance to invoke the Duk Duk spirit, a mysterious figure dressed in leaves to its waist. The dancers dress like him and wear a hideous cone-shaped mask. Women and children are not welcome. Today the Duk Duk dance is a tourist attraction.
