Samoyeds is an older collective name for several Samoyedic-speaking peoples, including the Nenets, Enets, Nganasan and Selkup. Their homelands extend from the Arctic tundra into the forests of western and central Siberia; they are not one people confined to the border with Europe.

Reindeer are central to life in many northern communities, providing transport, food, hides and materials for tools and ornaments. Forest communities, including many Selkup, also depend heavily on fishing and hunting. Historical images reflect this variety of landscapes and ways of life.

Older descriptions associate tattooing in some Samoyedic communities with decoration and protection from illness, including markings applied to girls. Other accounts mention animal-inspired motifs. These practices should be understood as local traditions rather than customs shared by every Samoyedic-speaking group.

Christian missionary activity and wider social changes affect body decoration unevenly across the region. Tattooing does not disappear everywhere in a single year. Comparisons with the animal tattoos preserved on ancient Pazyryk bodies are visually interesting, but resemblance alone does not demonstrate an unbroken historical connection.
