The story

Dress for movement. Ornaments of identity.

Mongolian peoples are communities of Mongolia and neighbouring regions with different local and religious traditions. Clothing, jewellery and hairstyles are especially important parts of their adornment.

The deel is a long garment worn with a sash or belt. It suits movement and a demanding climate, while colour, cloth and decoration can set special dress apart from everyday clothing. Hats and boots complete the look.

Some women's portraits show elaborate combinations of dressed hair, head ornaments and jewellery. Other images record Buddhist lamas in religious clothing. Appearance could change with the wearer's role and with the occasion.

These styles tell a wider story than the medieval conquests for which Mongolia is often remembered. Skilled makers worked with cloth and metal to create objects that were useful, beautiful and recognisable within their communities. Permanent tattoos were not a universal Mongolian custom.
