The story

Clothing, cattle and the Cape.

The Khoekhoe are peoples of southern Africa with a long history of cattle and sheep keeping. Europeans called them 'Hottentots', a name now considered derogatory that still appears in many older picture titles.

Skin garments, necklaces and head coverings shaped their appearance. Making clothing required skill: hides had to be prepared and worked before they could be worn. Ornaments added detail to garments that served everyday life as well as special occasions.

Their history is connected with that of neighbouring San communities, but the two are not the same people. Tattoo customs described among some San groups should not automatically be assigned to the Khoekhoe.

Early prints show people dressed, dancing and living together around the Cape. Behind the old labels are communities with their own names, skills and relationships. Looking closely at the clothing and ornaments brings those people into focus beyond the European encounters that dominate many accounts.
